For your future self

Create a Time Capsule for Your Future Self

A time capsule for your future self is a sealed collection of videos, photos, voice recordings and writing that you address to yourself and open on a date you set — five years out, ten, twenty. It records who you are right now rather than who you will later remember being, and it stays locked until the day arrives.

Your memory is a good editor and a bad archivist. It keeps the big events and quietly rewrites everything else, usually in your favour.

A capsule is the uncooperative version. It keeps the worry you had in March, the flat you thought was temporary, the opinion you now find embarrassing.

Your future self remembers the big events. A time capsule preserves the small things.

Why record yourself now

Ask anyone what they were like eight years ago and you get a summary — a job title, a city, a relationship. The texture is gone: what a normal Tuesday involved, what you were anxious about, who you called when something happened.

That texture is the whole value. It is also the only part you cannot reconstruct later, because by the time you want it you have already replaced it with the summary.

There is a second, less sentimental use. Writing down what you expect to happen, and then reading it years later, is the most direct feedback anyone gets on their own judgement.

What to put in a capsule for yourself

The instinct is to write a letter. Write the letter, then add the things a letter cannot carry.

Record, don't just write

  • A video to yourself, unscripted, filmed wherever you happen to be sitting
  • A voice note recorded on a walk, which sounds nothing like your writing voice
  • A slow pan around your home, exactly as untidy as it currently is
  • A photo of your desk, your fridge, your commute, your street
  • A screenshot of your bank balance, your calendar, your music history

State where you are

  • What you do all day, described as if to a stranger
  • Who you see most, and who you have lost touch with
  • What you are worried about, in specific rather than general terms
  • What you are hoping for, and how likely you think it is
  • What money currently feels like — what things cost, what you cannot afford
  • Three things you are grateful for, named rather than gestured at

Ask and predict

  • Questions for the person opening it: did you do it? was it worth it?
  • Predictions about your own life, dated and specific enough to be wrong
  • Predictions about the world, technology and the people around you
  • A promise to yourself, written plainly so it is uncomfortable to have broken
  • Advice you are currently giving other people and not taking

Record ten minutes today

You cannot film this year later. Open a capsule, film one honest answer, and add the rest before you seal it.

Create a capsule for your future self

Not just an email to yourself

Scheduling an email to arrive in ten years is easy, and it delivers text. That is the whole difference: text is the least evocative thing you own.

The item people react to when a capsule opens is almost never the letter. It is thirty seconds of video where they hear how they used to talk, or a photo of a kitchen they had entirely forgotten living in. A capsule carries those because it carries files — photos, video, audio, documents — not just words.

It is also sealed rather than pending. You cannot open it early, edit it in a weak moment, or lose it in an inbox you abandon two providers from now.

Six prompts, if you film nothing else

Sit down, press record, and answer these out loud. Ten minutes, no script, no second take.

What does a normal day look like?

From waking up to going to bed. Be boring on purpose — the boring parts are the ones that change beyond recognition.

Who is in your life right now?

Name them. Say how you know them and how often you speak. This is the section that will be hardest to read.

What are you afraid of?

Not in the abstract. The specific thing you thought about at 3am this week.

What are you trying to build?

The project, the relationship, the version of yourself. Say what success would actually look like.

What do you think happens next?

For you, and for everyone. Commit to it. You are allowed to be wrong; you are not allowed to be vague.

What do you want to ask yourself?

Finish with a direct question to the person watching. They are the only one who can answer it.

How far ahead should it open?

  1. One year

Short enough to still recognise yourself, long enough for predictions to resolve. Capsules opening within a year are free.

  2. Five years

The first genuinely uncomfortable distance. Most people have moved, changed jobs, or changed their mind about something central.

  3. Ten years

The most popular choice. Far enough that the video is a shock, close enough that the questions still matter to you.

  4. Twenty or thirty years

Written to a person you cannot really imagine. Our plans cover up to thirty years, with longer dates available as a per-year add-on.

Keeping it to yourself

Send it to yourself and you are the only recipient. Set it to private and the link works for nobody else; add a password and even the link is not enough.

One honest caveat: capsules are not end-to-end encrypted. They are encrypted at rest on Cloudflare infrastructure and we run automated safety checks, which means the content is technically reachable by us. For most people that is fine, but you should know it before you record your most private thirty minutes.

Questions about capsules to yourself

What is a time capsule to my future self?

It is a sealed digital capsule that you address to yourself and set to open on a chosen future date. It can hold video, photos, voice recordings, documents and a long written message, and it cannot be opened — by you or anyone else — before that date.

How is this different from scheduling an email to myself?

A scheduled email delivers text. A capsule carries files: video of how you talk, audio of your voice, photos of where you live, documents you want to keep. It is also sealed, so you cannot open it early, edit it, or lose it when you change email provider.

Can I send a capsule only to myself?

Yes. Add yourself as the only recipient and set the capsule to private, so nobody else can open it even with the link. You can add a password on top of that.

Can I open it early if I change my mind?

No. Sealed means sealed: the date cannot be moved and the capsule cannot be opened before it. You can delete a capsule you created, but you cannot peek inside it.

How long can I wait before it opens?

Anything from an hour to thirty years under our standard plans, and beyond thirty years with a small per-year add-on. Capsules opening within a year are free.

What is the best thing to record for my future self?

A short unscripted video describing an ordinary day: what you do, who you see, what you are worried about, and what you expect to happen next. People consistently report that the everyday detail affects them far more than the reflective letter they wrote alongside it.
