Create a Baby Time Capsule
A baby time capsule is a sealed collection of photos, videos, voice recordings and letters made during a pregnancy or a baby's first year and set to open on a future date — their first birthday, their tenth, their eighteenth. It keeps the months nobody remembers, the child least of all, and it cannot be opened by anyone before its date.
The first year is the most photographed of a person's life and the least remembered. The parents are too tired to retain it, and the baby never will.
A capsule is a way of writing to someone you have only just met — or have not met yet — and having it arrive when they are old enough to be curious about where they came from.

Three moments to start one
A baby capsule is usually one of these. They are different letters, and nothing stops you making all three.
Before the birth
A letter to a baby you have not met: what you hope, what you are nervous about, what the name shortlist looked like. It can only be written now — after the birth you know too much.
The first year
The voice notes at four in the morning, the first laugh, the things you swore you would never forget and already have. Collected as you go, sealed around the first birthday.
The baby shower
Everyone who will matter in this child's life is in one room, months before the child is. A message from each of them is worth more than another blanket.
The first year is the one everybody photographs and nobody remembers.
Baby time capsule ideas
Sorted by when it can be captured, because two of these three lists expire.
During the pregnancy
- A letter to the baby, written before you know who they are
- The scan pictures, photographed flat, with the date
- The name shortlist, including the ones that were vetoed and by whom
- A video of the room before it became a nursery
- What each of you thinks they will be like — signed predictions, to be checked
- A voice message from each parent, recorded in the last week
The first year
- The story of the birth, written while you still remember the order of events
- The hospital bracelet, the first outfit and the first card, photographed up close
- Ten seconds of video each month: same chair, same time of day
- A recording of the first laugh, the first babble, and whatever passes for a first word
- One ordinary day at three months, written down hour by hour
- The hardest night, described honestly — they may be pacing a hallway of their own when they read it
From everyone around them
- A voice message from each grandparent, saying who they are and what they hope
- A note from godparents, aunts and uncles: one thing they want this child to know
- The headlines, the prices and the song that was everywhere the week they were born
- A photo of the home, the street and the car they came home in
You add all of this yourself, including anything relatives send you: only a capsule's creator can upload to it. It also means nothing reaches your child that you have not seen first.
Start with the letter
Twenty minutes, tonight. Everything else in the capsule can be added over the coming months; the letter is the part that goes stale.
When should it open?
A baby capsule has the longest runway of any. These are the dates that make sense of it.
Their first birthday
The capsule for the parents. Sealed in the first weeks and opened at the first birthday party, by two people who can no longer remember being that frightened. It opens within a year, so it is free.
Their tenth birthday
Old enough to read it themselves, young enough to be delighted rather than embarrassed. The video of them at six weeks will look to them like footage of someone else.
Their eighteenth
The classic: the letter written before they were born, read by an adult. Add a new capsule each year and they can all open on the same morning.
Thirty years
Far enough that they may be expecting a child of their own, which is when a letter from a nervous parent-to-be lands hardest. Our plans run to thirty years, with longer dates available as a per-year add-on.
A baby shower time capsule
The traditional version is a box on a table: guests write a note or a prediction on a card, and the box is put away until a birthday. It works, provided nobody loses the box in three house moves.
The digital version comes in two shapes. In the first, one person — a parent, or whoever is organising the shower — collects a short video or a written message from each guest, uploads them into one capsule, and seals it. Guests cannot add to it themselves; somebody assembles it.
In the second, nobody collects anything. An event time capsule is a batch of capsules bought for the day: one QR code on the table, each guest writing from their own phone, and every message sealed the moment it is sent and addressed to the recipients you chose — the parents, usually, since the guest of honour cannot read yet.
Practical things worth knowing
A baby needs no email address
A recipient can be added by name alone and saved in your contacts. When the capsule opens, you hand over the link or the QR code yourself.
If the name is not chosen yet
Send the capsule to yourself. Recipients cannot be added after sealing, but the link and QR code can be shared with anyone — including, eventually, the person it was written for.
Add both parents
Recipients are emailed on the opening day. Eighteen years is a long time for one inbox to stay in use, so add two addresses rather than one.
Keep it private
A capsule about a child should not be public. Set it to private so only your recipients can open it, or add a password with a hint only your family would understand.
Trim the video
A free capsule includes 300 MB and a paid one 1 GB, with more available for a one-time fee. Video fills it fastest: keep the ten seconds that matter, not the whole clip.
You cannot fix it later, and that is the point
Once sealed, a capsule is read-only and its date is fixed. Nobody can open it early — not you, not your child, not us. If you change your mind entirely, you can delete it and start again.
That matters more for this capsule than for most. The letter you write before the birth is valuable precisely because it was written by someone who did not yet know how it would go. Edited afterwards, it becomes a different and much less interesting document.
Will it still be there in eighteen years?
It is the right question to ask of anything that offers to look after something for a whole childhood, and we refuse to answer it with a slogan. Files sit on Cloudflare R2 and capsule details on Cloudflare D1, encrypted at rest. If we ever had to stop, we commit to warning you in advance and releasing every pending capsule early rather than letting it disappear.
What we will not tell you is that a small company can promise you two decades. Keep your own copy of the originals as well — the scan pictures, the recordings, the letter. The capsule is the delivery, not the only archive.
