Create a Christmas Time Capsule
A Christmas time capsule is a sealed collection of photos, videos, voice messages and letters made over Christmas and set to open at a later one — next Christmas, or the year the children are grown. It keeps what the day looked and sounded like, and it cannot be opened by anyone before its date.
Christmas is the one day a family repeats on purpose: the same table, the same people, the same argument about the same board game. That repetition is what makes it the best day of the year for measuring change.
It is also loud, crowded and over by evening, which is why so little of it is ever kept.
Why Christmas is the right day for it
Everyone is already in one room, which for most families happens once or twice a year. The hard part of a family capsule — getting the people together — has been done for you.
It is also the day with the most things worth keeping that nobody keeps: the letter to Santa, a four-year-old explaining what reindeer eat, a grandfather's toast, the state of the kitchen at three in the afternoon.
And it comes round again. A capsule sealed this Christmas has an obvious day to open, an audience already assembled, and no need for anyone to remember a date.
Put two Christmases side by side, and the year between them is all you can see.
Christmas time capsule ideas
Aim for the ordinary parts. The posed photo in front of the tree will survive on its own; the noise around it will not.
From the day itself
- A slow video of the table before anyone sits down, and another once everyone has
- The tree, the decorations and the one ornament with a story, photographed up close
- Ten seconds of the room with everyone talking at once
- The menu, and who cooked what — with the recipe if it is a family one
- What was under the tree, and what it cost this year
From the children
- The letter to Santa, scanned or photographed before it is posted
- A video of them explaining how Santa gets in, in their own words
- What they asked for, what they got, and what they actually played with
- Their height against the door frame, and the drawing they made that week
- A message from them to themselves, next Christmas
From the grown-ups
- A voice message from each grandparent: a Christmas they remember from their own childhood
- One sentence from every adult: the best thing that happened this year
- A prediction each about next Christmas — who will be there, where, and what will have changed
- A letter to the children, to be read when they are old enough to find it interesting
You add all of this yourself, including anything relatives send you: only a capsule's creator can upload to it. In practice one person spends Christmas afternoon with a phone, asking everybody for ten seconds.
Record it while everyone is still at the table
The window is about four hours long and comes once a year. A phone, ten seconds per person, and you are done.

Next Christmas
The tradition version. A capsule that opens within a year is free, and opening it becomes part of the day — somewhere between lunch and the film.
Five Christmases from now
Long enough for a child to have become a visibly different person, and for the prices under the tree to be funny.
The year the letters to Santa stop
You cannot know the date in advance, so pick an age — ten or eleven — and let the letters come back to the person who wrote them.
Their 18th Christmas
Every year of childhood, handed over at once. They can see that a capsule is waiting and count down to it, but not what is inside.
Ten or twenty years
Opened by a family that has changed shape: new partners, new children, a different house. Our plans run to thirty years, with longer dates available as a per-year add-on.
Making it a yearly tradition
One capsule is a nice idea. One every Christmas is a record of a family growing up.
Open last year's, then make this year's
Watch the old one together, then record the new one while everyone is still laughing at it. The opening does the reminding, so the tradition keeps itself going.
Small enough to finish
A free capsule includes 300 MB: plenty for photos, voice messages and a handful of short videos. Ten-second clips beat a twenty-minute recording nobody will watch.
Save each one when it opens
An opened capsule stays online for the window you chose when sealing it, and is then deleted. Download the files on the day, and the Christmases start to line up on your own drive.
Dress it for the day
There is a free Christmas skin — evergreen and festive — that changes how the capsule's page looks to whoever opens it.
Giving one as a Christmas present
A capsule is an odd present, in a good way: what arrives on Christmas morning is the news that something is waiting, and the present itself turns up a year — or ten — later.
Recipients are emailed when the capsule is created, as well as on the opening day. To put it under the tree instead, create it with yourself as the recipient and print the capsule's QR code inside a card: the capsule is identical, and the announcement becomes yours to make.
For a young child, add them as a recipient by name alone — no email address needed — and hand over the link yourself when the day comes.
When the whole family wants to write their own
A personal capsule has one author. That suits a Christmas capsule assembled by one parent, but not a gathering of thirty where every cousin wants to say something in private.
That is what an event time capsule is for: a batch of capsules bought for the day, one QR code on the table, and each person writing from their own phone. Every message is sealed the moment it is sent and addressed to the recipients you chose — the grandparents, say, or the children — and nobody has to collect anything.
Will it still be there when they are eighteen?
For a capsule that opens next Christmas, the risk is small. For one that waits fifteen years it is the fair question, and we refuse to answer it with a slogan. Files sit on Cloudflare R2 and capsule details on Cloudflare D1, encrypted at rest. If we ever had to stop, we commit to warning you in advance and releasing every pending capsule early rather than letting it disappear.
What we will not tell you is that a small company can promise you decades. On the opening day everything downloads in standard formats, and the most durable copy of your family's Christmas will be the one you save yourselves.
