Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about creating and securing your time capsules.
What is a digital time capsule?
A digital time capsule is a set of files and messages you seal today and that can only be opened on a future date you choose. Time Capsule is a digital time capsule service: you add photos, videos, documents and a written message, pick the opening date and the recipients, and the capsule stays locked until that day arrives.
How does a digital time capsule work?
You create a capsule, add your files and your message, choose one or more recipients and an opening date, then lock it. From that moment it cannot be edited or opened early. Your recipients are emailed that a capsule is waiting for them, and again on the opening date, when they can read it and download everything.
Can I put videos in a digital time capsule?
Yes. Photos, videos, PDFs and other documents can all be added. Free capsules include 300 MB of storage and paid capsules include 1 GB, and you can add more storage for a small one-time fee.
Can I create a time capsule for my child?
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people use Time Capsule. A recipient can be added by name alone, without an email address, so a capsule for a child who has no inbox yet still works — you can share the link or QR code with them later. Many people seal a capsule to open on a child's eighteenth birthday.
How long can a digital time capsule stay locked?
You choose the date. Our plans cover durations of up to thirty years, and dates beyond that are available for a small per-year add-on. There is no minimum either: a capsule can open in an hour or in decades.
How much does a digital time capsule cost?
It is a single payment, never a subscription. Capsules that open within a year are free and include 300 MB of storage. Longer durations are priced by how far into the future they go, and the pricing page lists every tier with its one-time price.
What happens when the capsule reaches its opening date?
The capsule unlocks automatically on that date. Recipients get an email, and anyone with access can then read the message and download the files in standard formats such as JPEG, MP4 and PDF. It stays viewable online for the window you chose when sealing it, and is then deleted from our systems.
Can I send the capsule to multiple people?
Yes, simply add the emails of all the people or send them the link or QR code of the capsule.
Can I modify a capsule that is already locked?
No, like a time capsule buried underground, it is impossible to modify it once locked.
Can I delete a capsule?
You can delete your own personal capsules. Capsules submitted to an event, including anonymous guest submissions, cannot be cancelled by the guest or event owner. They are preserved for delivery on their scheduled dates and keep their agreed expiration dates.
Can I change the opening date of a capsule?
No, the opening date cannot be changed after it has been scheduled.
What is Time Capsule?
Time Capsule (time-capsule.io) is a digital time capsule service. You create a capsule containing photos, videos, documents and a written message, and send it to whoever you want — friends, family, or yourself — with a specific opening date. It is run by three brothers through Reen Tech LLC, a registered company in California.
What is the purpose of a Time Capsule?
It allows you to send a piece of the present into the future, to a date decided when locking the capsule.
What type of content can I put in a capsule?
Photos
Videos
Messages
Documents
Audio
...
Who can access my capsule?
Only people with the link will be able to access it. You can also add a password for extra security. Capsules are not end-to-end encrypted, though — see "How is my data protected?" for exactly who could technically reach stored content.
Is my data secure?
Yes — your capsule is stored securely and only shared with the people who have the link. For the full picture on encryption and who can technically access data, see "How is my data protected?" below.
When should I use Time Capsule?
Sending a message to your future self
Passing on a memory to a child for their 18th birthday
Celebrating a wedding
Preparing a surprise
Leaving an important message for loved ones
And of course, all the uses we haven't even thought of yet!
Will the recipient be notified when a capsule is created?
Yes, upon creation and opening. If you don't want them to be notified, nothing stops you from sending the capsule to yourself and sending them the link later.
Can I add a recipient to a locked capsule?
No, however, it is possible to send the capsule link to whoever you desire.
Can I use Time Capsule for an event or wedding?
Yes. An event time capsule lets you place a QR code on table cards or posters at a gathering. Guests scan the QR code with their phones, write a personal message, attach photos or a video, and choose an opening date inside a range you set. Each message is sealed immediately on sending and addressed to the recipients you choose (such as the newlyweds).
What is the difference between a personal capsule and an event capsule?
A personal capsule is created by one person (holding their private letters, vows, photos, and videos) and delivered to chosen recipients on a set date. An event capsule is designed for gatherings: you place a single QR code on table cards or posters, and every guest scans it from their own phone to write and seal their own message directly to the hosts. Guests need no account or app, and all messages unlock together on the future anniversary you choose.
Do event guests need an account or an app?
No. Guests scan the QR code from their phone, write their message on the page that opens, and send. There is nothing to install and no account to create. If they want a copy when the capsule opens, they can optionally leave their email address.
Do you sell my personal data?
No, never. We do not sell your personal data. It is used solely to operate the service and remains strictly yours.
Who owns the content in my capsules?
You remain the sole owner of all content (photos, videos, texts) that you upload to your capsules. You only grant us a license to store and deliver it.
Are there limits to the content I can send?
Yes. Illegal, hateful, or violent content (CSAM, terrorism, etc.) has no place here. Automated checks run on every capsule when it's created, and where something raises a safety, abuse, security, or legal concern we may block the capsule from being delivered or restrict the account. Those checks aren't perfect and can get it wrong in both directions. To be clear about one thing people worry about: writing honestly about grief, illness, mental health, or your own recovery is not against the rules — what's prohibited is content that encourages someone to hurt themselves.
What happens if I delete my account?
Your account, personal capsules and their files, contacts not needed for event delivery, and unused credits are removed from our active systems. Deleted data may remain in secure backups for up to 30 days. Event capsules and their delivery contacts survive account deletion, including anonymous guest submissions. Those capsules keep their scheduled opening dates, agreed expiration dates and existing recipient contacts, even if the event’s recipient list has since changed. Only the copy linked to your deleted account is cancelled.
Trust & Preservation
What happens if Time Capsule shuts down?
We'd never just disappear with your capsules. If we ever had to wind the service down, we commit to two things: we'll warn you well in advance, and we'll release every pending capsule early — delivering your messages ahead of their date rather than letting them be lost. You'd get your memories back, not a dead link. The honest reason we'd ever stop: the only thing that could force it is the running cost (the company and the servers). We keep that cost deliberately low, and we'd seek help from our community to keep it alive before ever going dark.
Will my data still be here in 10, 20, or 30 years?
Your capsule is stored, sealed, until its opening date — our plans cover up to 30 years, and you can schedule beyond that for a small per-year add-on. We've built on durable, professional infrastructure (Cloudflare R2 and D1, encrypted at rest) and we take preservation seriously. But we won't insult you with unbackable permanence claims — no one can honestly promise that. What we can promise: on opening day you download everything in standard formats and keep your own copy, and if we ever wind down we'll release your capsule early. The most durable copy is the one in your hands, and we make sure you get it.
How is my data protected?
Your files are stored on Cloudflare R2 and your capsule's details on Cloudflare D1 — encrypted at rest, transferred over encrypted connections (TLS), and held on infrastructure distributed across the globe. Your capsule is sealed and immutable from the moment you lock it until its opening date: you can't reopen it early, and it isn't an inbox we browse. To be straight with you, capsules aren't end-to-end encrypted — someone with deep access to our infrastructure could technically reach stored content (today, that's one person). We don't read your capsules ourselves. The exception is safety: when you create a capsule, automated checks analyse its contents before it's sealed, looking for material that raises a safety, abuse, security, or legal concern. Some outcomes are handled automatically — a capsule can be blocked from delivery and an account restricted without anyone here having read it — and some are put in front of a human for a closer look. Those checks aren't perfect, so if you think one got it wrong, write to us and we'll look. Payments are handled by Stripe — we never see or store your card details.
Can I open or download my capsule early?
No — and that's on purpose. A time capsule you can open anytime is just a folder, so once you seal it, it stays locked until the opening date. (The one exception: if we ever had to shut the service down, we'd unlock and deliver everything early so nothing is lost.) On the opening date it's all yours — read and download your photos, videos, and message in standard formats you can keep anywhere.
How long do you keep my data?
We keep your capsule sealed until its opening date. After it opens, it stays viewable online for a window you choose (up to a year), so recipients have time to read and download it — then it's permanently deleted from our systems. We're a vault and a messenger, not a permanent archive, and we're upfront about that. If you delete a personal capsule or your account, deleted data leaves our live systems immediately and our backups within 30 days. Event capsules survive account deletion and keep the retention period agreed for the event. The lasting copy is the one you download on opening day.
Who is behind Time Capsule?
Three brothers — a CTO, a software engineer, and a math teacher. Two of us became fathers and wanted to send messages their daughters would open years later; the idea pulled all three of us in. Time Capsule is operated by Reen Tech LLC, a registered company in California. We run it carefully and personally — it's not a faceless platform. The full story is on our Preservation page.
Who owns my memories?
You do — completely. Creating a capsule grants us a limited license to store and deliver it, and that's all. We don't sell your data, we don't use it for anything beyond running the service, and we don't read your sealed capsules. You can delete your account and personal capsules whenever you want. Event capsules, including anonymous guest submissions, and their delivery contacts are preserved for the recipients after account deletion. Those capsules keep their agreed expiration dates.
