# Create a Birthday Time Capsule

> A birthday time capsule is a sealed collection of photos, videos, voice messages and writing put together on or around a birthday and set to open on a later one — eighteen to thirty, thirty to forty, or a child's next milestone. It records exactly who someone is on one birthday and delivers it to them on another.

A birthday is the one date everyone already remembers, which makes it the easiest possible opening date to choose.

It is also the only day of the year most people naturally take stock — which is precisely the state of mind that produces a capsule worth opening.

## Seal it on one birthday, open it on another {#pairs}

The gap is the whole design. These are the pairs people choose most.

- **18 → 30** — The most extreme contrast available. Twelve years between someone who has just left school and someone with a mortgage, or not, and strong feelings either way.
- **30 → 40** — Chosen by people who suspect their thirties are about to be the decade everything is decided. Reading the predictions back is the point.
- **40 → 50** — Less about change and more about record. A clear statement of what mattered at forty, from someone who will have quietly revised the story by fifty.

- Who your friends are this year, listed by name
- What things cost: rent, coffee, a phone, a tank of fuel
- The app you open most, which will be the funniest item in ten years

### The inner report

- What you want by the time this opens, stated as a target
- What you are afraid of, specifically
- The decision you are currently avoiding
- What you are proud of this year and have told nobody
- A message to yourself on the birthday it opens

### Predictions worth checking

- Where you will be living, and with whom
- What your job will be, if the word still applies
- Which friendships will have survived
- What technology will have changed beyond recognition
- One prediction about the world you are confident about

### You, for yourself

The simplest: add yourself as the only recipient, set it private, and be honest because nobody else will read it.

### A parent, for a child

Sealed on one birthday, opened on a milestone one. A recipient can be added by name alone, so a young child needs no email address.

### Friends, for the birthday person

One person collects video messages from everyone, uploads them, and sets the capsule to open on a future birthday. Guests cannot upload directly — the organiser assembles it.

## Using it as a present {#surprise}

A capsule makes an unusual gift because it is the only one that gets better by not being available. What arrives now is the notification; what arrives later is the thing.

One detail worth planning: recipients are emailed when the capsule is created, as well as on the opening day. If you want the whole thing to be a surprise, create the capsule with yourself as the recipient and share the link with them later — the capsule is unchanged, only the notification differs.

Recipients are emailed when a capsule is created, so for a full surprise create the capsule with yourself as the recipient and share the link or QR code with the person later. The capsule itself works exactly the same way.

### How far ahead should a birthday capsule open?

### Can a group of friends make one together?

One person creates and owns the capsule, and only they can add content to it. Friends send their videos and messages to that person, who uploads them before sealing. There is no shared upload link.
